First Responders have notoriously been behind the times when it comes to technology especially when it comes to patient care reporting. Hospital systems have been on electronic systems for some time , but EMS or fire systems are all over the map. from archaic technology systems to paper reporting still. One of my dreams as a paramedic is to have a system in place that 1. you never have to duplicate efforts… ever and 2. it is small enough that it doesn’t become a burden and 3. it syncs with every other first responder’s pcr program or device along with every hospital’s pcr system. This will just streamline a long time problem we have in EMS… paperwork!

Justin Schorr talks with Forte holdings CEO Dio Nugent about what is coming up in the world of technology and for first responders.

Several months ago I had the pleasure of talking with Mark Glencorse again about a company he was working with. As many of you may know or not know about Mark he is a consumate and meticulous, detail oriented paramedic with a professional interest in clinical trials, studies and anything to improve patient care. As we began to talk about a company he began working with, Benechill, he mentioned they would be looking for some video to be done. Now it is always good to find work from friends, especially anything to bring Mark and I together again, but I learned of product called RhinoChill® that simply blew me away. Now it hasn’t cleared the FDA in the US, but it is clear in Europe and of course like with most videos specific to a region it had to be authentic.

Chris Eldridge and I spent about 5 days in Zurch Switzerland filming what you see above. From a production standpoint it couldn’t have happened anymore smoothly without the unbelievable help from Mathias Duschl. Now if I had a Mathias for every production I work on I would be in heaven, but since this isn’t the case I will always strive to work with companies to understand logistics the way he did for this shoot.

As a Paramedic I don’t have to think outside the box to know that if you cool the brain or the core during a cardiac or stroke then the body doesn’t need to metabolize oxygen as much and thus helping to decrease the chance for neurological deficits. This product just makes sense to me and it sure beats using cold saline or cold compresses for a therapeutic hypothermia protocol. If you are interested in learning more about the BeneChill or the RhinoChill® device visit benechill.com

If you haven’t met Tim Phalen you should. I have only been in EMS for 10 years and I met him early in my career in Sacramento in an ECG class about 7 years ago. Not only has he made it easy for us to understand the 12 lead, but he has made it fun. He is a dynamic character with a fascinating story. We had a chance to sit down with him in Las Vegas at the EMS World Expo for an interview.

From our friends over at LOD they were privileged enough to sit down with a S.E.R.E Program Manager as he reflects on that day at the Pentagon. It is still amazing to me to this that this was 10 years ago already, but our respects and admiration must go out to those to have the sacrifice for our country and families. S.E.R.E Program Manager Ricky Arnold, Sr. reflects on the horrific memories of that dark September day at the Pentagon in 2001. Despite being ordered to leave the flame-engulfed building, Ricky and his team knew they had to stay and help. Ricky recounts reaching a jammed corridor that served as a barricade between his team and the unreachable victims on the other side.
