I don’t think I know where to begin, but in Colorado Springs, Colorado they have an amazing operation not only because of the people that work there, but may of the programs that they have put together have been inspired by the boots on the ground and organically came to be without the drive from the top.
Sentimental Journey Program was inspired by a couple of Paramedics from Colorado Springs that were transporting a patient from hospice to his home in Manitou Springs. The patient knew that this would be his last trip outside and mentioned to the paramedic that he would love to see the aspens one more time before he goes home. Just then the medics pulled to the side of the road and let the patient out to view the aspens on the side of the road. While this is a bit out pf the scope of what we do it was the right thing to do and the patient was able to experience something he normally wouldn’t be able to do considering his condition. This sparked a program that offers the chance for patients in hospice to experience one more event of their choice and an AMR paramedic signs up to be with that patient. From the interviews with a few of the people that helped with this program all I can say is that it was gut wrenching. I kept thinking that this is what I got into healthcare for…
On another note I also was able to spend some time with the Color Guard. I believe that when you take on the responsibility of being part of the Color Guard there is a badge of pride that comes with it. It is clear that these guys take the National EMS Memorial seriously and since they represent it there truly is no higher calling. Interviewing these guys was a blast. You can imagine in true EMS humor it was a blast to get to know them.
